The Abject Woman in Sarah Daniels' Ripen Our Darkness
Over the centuries, women have been marginalised by the patriarchal society. They are associated with some societal roles that are expected only from women such as motherhood, affection, and housework. For this reason, acting against the social expectations is considered as a threat by patriarchy. Thus, these nonconformist women are expelled or labelled as the abject which is theory of Julia Kristeva. Notwithstanding, many of the women play writers such as Sarah Daniels has succeeded in displaying the realities of these women who are in effort to come into existence in this restricted world. This article will discuss Sarah Daniels’ Ripen Our Darkness protagonist, Mary who is abjected by the male characters in the play and who attempts to raise her voice and resist all the challenges posed by male authority. Consequently, she could not succeed in maintaining this resistance to the end of the play and this article will show that she completely becomes the abject figure.
