CHALLENGES IN THE SELECTION OF SHIPPING LINES IN MAIN COLLECTION DISTRICTS OF MANILA: TOWARDS A PROPOSED PROCESS IMPROVEMENT STRATEGY
This study investigated the challenges faced by customs brokers and freight forwarders in the shipping industry, with a particular focus on issues such as container demurrage, detention, and fluctuating freight rates. It examined how factors like the frequency of using specific shipping lines, the experience level of professionals, and the type of shipping line impacted these challenges. The findings revealed that even frequent users and experienced brokers continued to encounter significant problems, particularly with rising costs and delays’ older shipping lines, which often rely on outdated manual systems, were especially prone to operational inefficiencies, exacerbating delays and increasing unexpected charges. This suggested that the experience and expertise of brokers alone were insufficient to overcome the systemic issues in the industry. The study highlighted the need for shipping companies to modernize their systems by adopting new technology to improve operational efficiency and enhance communication with clients. Clearer, more consistent pricing practices were also essential to reduce uncertainty and improve cost predictability. By addressing these issues, shipping companies would have improved the overall efficiency and fairness of the shipping process, benefiting both themselves and their clients. The insights gained from this study are valuable for industry stakeholders looking to streamline operations, reduce costs, and ultimately create a more transparent and reliable shipping environment.
