Self-Discovery, Spiritual Enlightenment and Their Contemporary Relevance: A Study of Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist and Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha
The journey of the two protagonists in the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse showcases their paths to self-discovery and spiritual enlightenment. The protagonist Santiago’s quest in The Alchemist is driven by his dreams and the search for material treasure, while Siddhartha’s journey in Siddhartha focuses on self-enlightenment through life lessons and the rejection of external teachings. This paper compares the journeys of both Santiago and Siddhartha, focusing on the role of dreams, guidance, and personal growth in the transformation they undergo. By using Freud and Jung’s psychological theories, as well as Campbell and Frankl’s philosophical ideas, this paper explores a common theme of following one’s path, self-actualization, and the integration of the unconscious. Additionally, both novels focus on the significance of the personal journey towards self-discovery, depicting that true fulfilment is not found in the outside world but within oneself. The journeys of the two protagonists show us the transformative power of their inner growth, as both characters learn to believe in their instincts, overcome struggles, and discover the deeper purpose of their lives. Furthermore, the paper applies a multidisciplinary lens, linking literary exploration with modern real-life applications to highlight the timeless relevance of these themes. Through a comparative framework, this study offers new insights into how inner transformation and meaning-making remain vital in both literature and contemporary life.
