REALISM AND THE GREAT LAKES REGION OF AFRICA'S UNSTABLE SECURITY: AN ANALYSIS AT THREE LEVELS

This paper examines the enduring security challenges in the Great Lakes Region of Africa through the lens of realist theory. By analyzing the interplay of power, interests, and state behaviour at the individual, national, and international levels, the study sheds light on the factors contributing to the region's persistent instability. The paper argues that the pursuit of self-interest by leaders, the competition among states, and the influence of external powers have exacerbated tensions and fueled conflict. Despite various peace initiatives and international interventions, the region remains vulnerable to renewed cycles of violence. A more comprehensive understanding of the region's security dynamics requires a nuanced analysis incorporating realist and non-realist perspectives.
