GRAHA ROGAS: A COMPREHENSIVE SCIENTIFIC REINTERPRETATION OF AYURVEDIC INFECTIOUS DISEASE PARADIGM

Graha Rogas represent one of Ayurveda's most enigmatic yet profoundclinical concepts, deeply rooted in the pediatric specialtyof Kaumarabhritya. Historically classified under Bhuta Vidya (knowledge ofsupernatural entities), these disorders have been marginalized incontemporary discourse due to their mythological framing and perceivedlack of scientific validity. Texts like the Ashtanga Sangraha and SushrutaSamhita dedicated entire sections to Graha Chikitsa, while later works(Kumara Tantra, Chakradatta) preserved detailed descriptions of theseacute, life-threatening conditions. Modern skepticism arises from thepersonification of Grahas as entities like Skanda, Putana, or Revati—alanguage reflecting the cultural milieu of ancient scholars rather than literalbelief. This review posits that Graha Rogas constitute Ayurveda'ssophisticated framework for infectious diseases, with "Grahas" symbolizingpathogenic microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, protozoa). We deconstruct thisparadigm through epidemiological, clinical, and pathophysiologicalcorrelations, arguing for its urgent integration into modern infectious diseasemodels. This review article aims to demystify Graha Rogas by reinterpretingtheir characteristics, causative factors, clinical presentations, andmanagement principles through a contemporary scientific lens, particularlyconcerning microbial infections and their impact on physical andpsychological well-being.
