Fault Detection in High Voltage Cables Using Fourier series for Improved Performance
The study examined the use of Fourier's series embedded in MATLAB/Simulink software to identify faults in high voltage cables. The proposed cabling monitoring methodology, as well as theoretical studies, are presented accordingly, the tests are based on the voltage and current signals in the cable's frequency-dependent behaviour. The reliability and quality of the electricity supply significantly influences the nation's economic growth and development. The 330kV transmission line network is modelled with sources at both ends of the line; the cable parameters are modelled mathematically using MATLAB/Simulink software via Fourier series. Partial discharge diagnosis is applied on the line to ascertain the condition of the cable under healthy and faulty situations. The impedance and frequency measurement data are developed to assess the viability of the faulty and healthy 50m XLPE Cable under a phase-to-phase open circuit case study. The estimated and set-up cable model parameters are analysed by determining the input impedance of the XLPE cable for various signal connections at various frequencies between 100 kHz and 100MHz. The frequency ranges used in this simulation are 100 kHz to 100 MHz, within which, the faulty open loop XLPE cable's impedance spectra (L1, L2) are measured. However, the 50–100 MHz frequency range that is measured, matched the projected spectrum very well. It is found that the output input impedance response spectra matched virtually the measured spectra except for a slight distortion in the measured spectra.
