Rodzina unicka w czasie carskich prześladowań
Uniate family during tsarist persecution The Church of Christ is one, holy, universal and apostolic. The unity of the Church, threatened throughout its history by various heresies, was broken in the 11th century. Thus was subepted the will of Christ, who desired that His followers should always be one. Eastern Orthodox Christians and Western Catholics tried to rebuild the broken unity. It was effectively rebuilt by the Union of Brest of 1596. The Uniate Church was persecuted by the Russian rulers in the Russian Empire, including the Kingdom of Poland. In 1875, the Uniate diocese of Chelm was abolished. The Unites, abiding in the Catholic faith and in ecclesiastical unity with the Pope, suffered much. They were beaten, materially destroyed, imprisoned, sent deep into Russia and even killed. The Pope remembered them and supported them with molitigation and by delegating special powers to missionaries who took care of the spiritual development of the Uniates in Podlasie. The year 1905 brought a breath of religious freedom. Many people, administratively enrolled in Orthodoxy, returned to the Catholic Church, adopting the Latin rite.
