Report on the School of Polar Hydrology – methodology in hydrological and hydro-biochemical research

From November 4–8, 2024, the School of Polar Hydrology took place at the “Storczyk” Ecological Station in Karpacz, bringing together researchers specializing in polar and mountain hydrology. Key topics included hydrological measurements, water chemistry, microbiology, and remote sensing and a dedicated session on polar limnology. During the event, researchers had the chance to exchange knowledge and experiences and improve their skills in hydrological measurements in environmental conditions similar to the Arctic. A key part of the program was working with advanced measurement equipment, which helped participants understand how the technology works and its limitations. Tools used included a water drone with ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) to measure water flow in streams and lakes, flow current meters, flow sensors, multimeters for analyzing water chemistry, and multispectral cameras. The event concluded with key findings and data analysis summarized in this report, highlighting methodologies and future research directions. Project: HarSval Bilateral initiative aiming at Harmonisation of the Svalbard cooperation. Contract number: UMO-2023/43/7/ST10/00001. The activities were funded from the means of the EEA and Norway Grants 2014-2021.
