The Role of Nanotechnology in Sustainable Agriculture: Applications, Benefits and Challenges
Abstract: The global food production system is under increasing strain from growing populations, environmental challenges, and decreasing arable land. Traditional agricultural methods, heavily reliant on chemical inputs, have led to detrimental impacts on biodiversity, soil health, and water systems. To address these concerns, nanotechnology offers innovative solutions through the application of nanoparticles (NPs). This paper explores the extensive role of nanotechnology in sustainable agriculture, focusing on its applications in the development of nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, nanosensors, and nano-enabled water treatment. While nanotechnology holds promise for enhancing agricultural efficiency and minimizing environmental harm, concerns about the potential risks of NPs on ecosystems and human health warrant further research. This study provides a detailed examination of the current state of nanotechnology in agriculture, its benefits, risks, and the way forward for realizing sustainable farming practices globally.
