GENDER DISPARITIES AND MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

This study seeks to explore gender disparities in mathematics and how it affects the academic performance of male, and female students in the mathematics subject. The researchers used an adapted questionnaire to gather the data from 133 grade 10 respondents coming from the Guihulngan National High School–Hilaitan which 60 of them are male and 73 of them are female. Analyses of the responses lead to notable results. It shows that male respondents have higher self-efficacy than females having a weighted mean of 3.47 than the 3.35 of females. Though the result reveals that they have the same level of attitudes towards learning mathematics, a discrepancy is still seen in their mathematics performance which is derived from their third-quarter mathematics examination scores. There were a larger number of male respondents who got high scores labeled as having an outstanding performance while female respondents outnumbered males in the group of students having poor performance in their mathematics quarterly examination. The following results lead to a conclusion that males have a better performance than females in mathematics upon comparing their weighted mean, therefore indicating that gender disparities influence the mathematics performance of the grade 10 students in GNHS–Hilaitan.
