The term 'caste' as used today in the Sangam society did not exist at that time. But it cannot be denied that the elements of caste are visible in some places. Our grammar and literature show that the structure of caste in society has continuously developed in many stages. It is an absurd argument that the category 'caste' did not exist in Tamil society in the beginning. It can be seen through research that it emerged as a professional surname, turned into a clan name over time and later became a caste name by birth. In that sense, the purpose of this article is to discuss the records on castes.
