An Introduction to Emotional Behavior Therapy (EBT)
This paper introduces Emotional Behavior Therapy (EBT) as a generic, integrative therapeutic approach designed to help individuals manage emotions and behaviors to improve mental health and overall functioning. Drawing from foundational theories in behaviorism, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and emotion-focused modalities, EBT emphasizes the dynamic interrelationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The paper traces the historical development of EBT through four phases, from behaviorist origins to its current integrative form that includes mindfulness and resilience-building techniques. Key principles of EBT—such as emotional regulation, behavioral change, and individualized interventions—are outlined, followed by a detailed step-by-step guide for practitioners. A case study of an adolescent with Hikikomori syndrome and trichotillomania illustrates the phased application of EBT. The paper concludes with an evaluation of EBT’s benefits and limitations, affirming its adaptability and evidence-based foundation, while acknowledging challenges such as cultural sensitivity and therapist competence.
