THE CURRENT STATE OF JOURNALISM IN MONGOLIA: DEVELOPMENT TRENDS AND CHALLENGES
Abstract The aim of this article is to analyze the current state of journalism in Mongolia, identify future trends and challenges, and propose ways to address the problems. The authors focus on the development of journalism since 1990, and demonstrate how globalization, demassification, conglomeration, and convergence – factors that determine the direction of development of global journalism – affect the development of journalism in Mongolia based on concrete examples. These global factors influence the transformations and innovative approaches in the activities of Mongolian mass media, which the authors have sought to demonstrate. Furthermore, the authors discuss new approaches such as online journalism, ecological journalism, investigative journalism, economic journalism, citizen journalism, and mobile journalism that have entered Mongolian journalism in the past three decades, and examine the positive and negative aspects of these approaches. Based on the findings of studies looking at the current state of journalism in Mongolia, the authors categorize the existing challenges into five main groups and suggest ways to address them. The authors have primarily used research methods such as comparative analysis, content analysis, surveys, and historical review.
