Navigating Academic Success: Insights from Advisors on the Retention of First-Generation College Students
First-generation college students often face unique challenges that can hinder their academic success. A qualitative study was conducted to explore the relationship between academic advisors and the retention of first-generation college students. Through indepth interviews, this study aimed to uncover the challenges faced by first-generation college students and the strategies academic advisors employ to support them. The analysis was framed through Rendon’s Validation Theory, emphasizing the importance of validation in fostering student success. Findings revealed that first-generation college students require some level of social, psychological, and academic support to be successful. Advisors expressed that while student groups can be beneficial to aid in community and a sense of belonging, they are not always a necessity for every firstgeneration student.
