The Integration of Maqāṣidī Tafsir and the Prophet's Hadith in the Prohibition of Ghibah: A Study of QS. Al-Ḥujurāt: 12

This study explores the integration of maqāṣidī tafsir and prophetic ḥadīths in understanding the prohibition of ghibah (backbiting) in QS. Al-Ḥujurāt: 12. Using a qualitative approach and library research method, the study analyzes classical and contemporary tafsir literature and authentic hadiths through the framework of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, particularly focusing on ḥifẓ al-dīn (protection of religion), ḥifẓ al-nafs (protection of the soul), and ḥifẓ al-ʿaql (protection of the intellect). The findings indicate that the Qur'anic prohibition of ghibah, reinforced by powerful metaphors and corresponding hadiths, is not only a normative command but also a comprehensive ethical system for preserving human dignity, social cohesion, and psychological well-being. This study highlights that integrating maqāṣidī interpretation with ḥadīth offers a relevant and contextual moral-educational approach to addressing digital-age communication challenges.
