Vulnérabilité socio-spatiale et risque inondation dans la ville de Kinshasa

Flood damage in Kinshasa is not distributed evenly across all neighborhoods. The peri-central and riverside neighborhoods are the most vulnerable, and are characterized by precariousness and a high incidence of water-borne diseases such as malaria, diarrhea and typhoid fever. Additionally, dense city neighborhoods are areas vulnerable to flooding. This article proposes a typology of socio-spatial inequalities in the different neighborhoods of Kinshasa, based on a principal component analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Testing the spatial autocorrelation of the first four dimensions of the PCA reveals that neighborhoods with similar characteristics tend to be close together. Households living in dense neighborhoods live in promiscuous conditions, and in haphazard construction, in a degraded living environment, making them increasingly vulnerable to floods and their consequences.
