Cradle-Based Syntrophic Miyawaki (CBSM): Integrating Regenerative Agroforestry into Native Urban Forests in Ireland
This white paper presents the Cradle-Based Syntrophic Miyawaki (CBSM) model, a hybrid planting approach combining the rapid afforestation benefits of the Miyawaki method with the regenerative philosophy of syntropic agroforestry. Developed for the Irish context, CBSM introduces “cradle” planting basins, native companion species guilds, and multi-strata forest succession to create ecologically resilient micro-forests in urban and peri-urban environments. Focusing on native Irish species, the paper provides a planting matrix with soil preferences, light tolerances, and scientifically-informed companion pairings. CBSM is proposed as a low-input, high-output nature-based solution for biodiversity restoration, climate adaptation, and ecological education. Originally conceptualised as part of a Climate Entrepreneurship project at Trinity College Dublin, this white paper is designed to support researchers, practitioners, educators, and policymakers exploring next-generation afforestation strategies.
