English Medium Instruction at the University of Chittagong: A Case Study
This study aimed to investigate the implementation of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) at the University of Chittagong in Bangladesh, focusing on the challenges faced by stakeholders—primarily students and teachers transitioning from Bangla medium instruction to EMI. It also sought to assess the impact of EMI on students and provide recommendations for improvement. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study gathered data through questionnaires and classroom observations. A total of 180 students and 8 teachers from various disciplines involved in EMI programs at the university participated in the study. The findings revealed that while both students and teachers recognized the benefits of EMI, such as enhancing global competitiveness and improving English proficiency, several obstacles were identified. These included disparities in students' English language skills, psychological barriers like anxiety and fear of judgment, a lack of preparatory language courses, inadequate teacher training, and insufficient institutional support. Based on these challenges, the study recommended the introduction of specialized English preparatory courses, EMI-focused teacher training programs, and the establishment of comprehensive policy frameworks to ensure the successful implementation of EMI in public universities across Bangladesh.
