THE INTERSECTION OF INSECURITY AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN NIGERIA: A CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS
Nigeria faces a critical dual crisis of insecurity and substance abuse, which threatens both national stability and public health and undermines national development. This paper provides a conceptual analysis exploring the intersection of these two pressing issues, using Strain Theory to understand how societal pressures such as violence, economic instability, and displacement drive individuals toward substance abuse. The analysis examines the state of insecurity in Nigeria, focusing on insurgency, banditry It also highlights how these create significant psychological trauma and mental health issues. The analysis also explores alarming rates of substance abuse in Nigeria which far exceed the global average and reveals that substance abuse and insecurity have a vicious cyclical relationship, where insecurity drives substance use, and widespread substance abuse worsens insecurity. This paper emphasizes the need for sustainable solutions that address the root causes of insecurity, the mental health crisis, and the socioeconomic factors driving both insecurity and drug use. It concludes with recommendations that strengthened security measures, expanded access to mental health and substance abuse treatment will go a long way in addressing these issues
