Differential Effects of Maternal vs. Paternal Involvement on Adolescents' Academic Buoyancy and Achievement

Abstract Parental involvement significantly influences adolescents' academic outcomes, yet the distinct contributions of maternal and paternal roles remain underexplored. This study investigates the differential effects of maternal versus paternal involvement on adolescents' academic buoyancy—the ability to navigate everyday academic challenges—and overall academic achievement. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 500 adolescents and their parents through surveys and interviews. The findings reveal that maternal involvement predominantly supports emotional resilience and academic guidance, whereas paternal involvement fosters problem-solving and independence. Adolescents with balanced engagement from both parents exhibited the highest levels of academic buoyancy and achievement. These results underscore the complementary nature of maternal and paternal roles and have implications for parenting strategies, educational programs, and policy development aimed at optimizing academic outcomes for adolescents.
