MODERN TRENDS IN TERMINOLOGY: TOWARDS A DYNAMIC, INTERDISCIPLINARY, AND INCLUSIVE LEXICON
Terminology, traditionally regarded as a subfield of applied linguistics and information science, has evolved significantly in the past few decades in response to the growing complexity and interconnectivity of global knowledge systems. In an era defined by globalization, the rapid expansion of scientific domains, and digital transformation, terminology is no longer limited to static definitions or mono-disciplinary usage. Instead, it has become a dynamic and adaptive system, deeply embedded in the processes of knowledge creation, technological innovation, and cross-cultural communication. This article investigates the contemporary trends shaping modern terminology, with particular attention to the forces that are accelerating its transformation. These include the increasing reliance on interdisciplinary approaches in science and technology, the proliferation of neologisms driven by emerging digital technologies, and the need for inclusive and culturally sensitive language in both technical and public communication. The study also explores the growing use of artificial intelligence and natural language processing tools in the identification, validation, and harmonization of specialized vocabulary across languages and domains. By examining the roles of standardization bodies and multilingual terminology databases, this article highlights how modern terminological systems are being reshaped to meet the demands of an interconnected world. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of socially responsible and accessible terminology, especially in domains such as healthcare, climate change, and nuclear safety, where public trust and comprehension are essential. Ultimately, the analysis presented herein demonstrates that the study of terminology is not merely a linguistic exercise, but a critical component of global scientific infrastructure, public communication, and cultural identity in the 21st century.
