Hospitality is a part of the culture of ancient Tamils, as can be seen from Tamil literature. In ancient times, when people went on a long journey, they would stop at the houses of strangers to stay and eat. Then they would continue their journey. It is a tradition among people to welcome newcomers to their homes and live by providing them with food and other necessities. It can be seen from the songs of the Perumpanathrupadai that Tamils excelled in hospitality by giving the food available in their own land to others.
