INTERVIEWING ELITES: TIPS AND TRICKS FOR A NOVICE

Abstract Interview is a common data collection tool used in qualitative research. While qualitative interviews provide an excellent means to gain in-depth knowledge of people’s experiences from their own perspectives, a few potential risks can emerge during their conduct. Interviews will become more challenging when the potential participants involve a group of elites. Considering challenges related to access, power dynamics, technological issues, ethical considerations, and methodology, the purpose of this study is to identify some tips and tricks for a novice researcher in conducting elite interviews. Using a reflection method in conducting interviews with police elite in Pakistan during my PhD study and analysis of related books and journals, this paper outlines tips and tricks for novice researchers who plan to interview elites as respondents of their studies.
