EU’s New Migration Pact: A Historic move forward or a replication of past Mistakes?
In 2024, the European Union approved a ‘long-awaited’ migration and asylum pact marking a ‘historic’ step towards a unified and a cohesive European framework on migration management. The pact introduced measures such as screening regulation, Eurodac system, asylum procedures, and a solidarity principle to elevate migration pressure on countries of first arrival while strengthening a robust European migration system. Notwithstanding these efforts, the pact has raised critical questions and concerns about its effectiveness, particularly due to focusing on returns over migrant protection. This article explores the pact’s potential consequences on migrants and its broader impact on third countries.
