Accompanying Newcomer Youth Through Their Experiences at California Community Colleges
This case study explores the postsecondary experiences of newcomer youth in California community colleges, focusing on the challenges immigrant students face and how these relate to state policies. The research highlights the diverse needs of unaccompanied Newcomers, including their adjustment to high school, enrollment challenges, and interactions with the American education and legal systems. Systems theory provides a framework for understanding these students’ complex challenges as they navigate adulthood and education pathways. Based on data collected from interviews with four Newcomer youth, this study reveals the emotional impact of parental separation, limited support from sponsors, financial strains on guardians, and language barriers as significant obstacles to academic success. By bridging gaps in support and resources, the education system can better equip newcomer youth to successfully transition to postsecondary education and beyond.
