Dutch History Overseas: Public Debates and Recent Narratives

Outside of the Netherlands, historical research and controversies on Dutch overseas and colonial history have received only scant attention of historians. This goes in particular for works written in Dutch. The effect is deplorable. European colonial history is largely written without serious engagement with one of its most important actors. This article aims to provide, first, an overview on some of the public history debates relevant to the colonial past in the Netherlands. It then, secondly, introduces works of synthesis and historicizes some key developments in the literature. Finally and thirdly, the article discusses recent research on the role and importance of violence in the Dutch trading and colonial empire.

Abstract

Outside of the Netherlands, historical research and controversies on Dutch overseas and colonial history have received only scant attention of historians. This goes in particular for works written in Dutch. The effect is deplorable. European colonial history is largely written without serious engagement with one of its most important actors. This article aims to provide, first, an overview on some of the public history debates relevant to the colonial past in the Netherlands. It then, secondly, introduces works of synthesis and historicizes some key developments in the literature. Finally and thirdly, the article discusses recent research on the role and importance of violence in the Dutch trading and colonial empire.
