Potential distribution of the invasive marine species Potamocorbula amurensis (Amur River clam) in Australia

This report describes the process of modelling the maximum potential range of Potamocorbula amurensis using the Species Range Mapping system (developed by ABARES). The Species Range Mapping system uses spatial modelling algorithms to predict marine species’ potential ranges based on their temperature tolerances using satellite sea surface temperature data. Water temperature is the key limiting factor in most marine species distributions. The temperature tolerances of Potamocorbula amurensis were researched and a preliminary distribution model generated which was then adjusted to match the worldwide distribution from published observational records.

Abstract

This report describes the process of modelling the maximum potential range of Potamocorbula amurensis using the Species Range Mapping system (developed by ABARES). The Species Range Mapping system uses spatial modelling algorithms to predict marine species’ potential ranges based on their temperature tolerances using satellite sea surface temperature data. Water temperature is the key limiting factor in most marine species distributions. The temperature tolerances of Potamocorbula amurensis were researched and a preliminary distribution model generated which was then adjusted to match the worldwide distribution from published observational records.
