"A Symbolic Analysis of the Dahān-e Azhdari Motif on the Sang-e Haft Qalam Tombstone of Prince Qarib Mirza (902 AH)"

The Sang-e Haft Qalam tombstone belongs to Prince Qarib Mirza and dates from the year 902 AH. The carving of this masterpiece was carried out over seven years in seven distinct stages. First, Master Shamsal-Din crafted it in the form of a chest and later refined it through a flattening technique. In the third stage, the interior of the structure was hollowed out, and in three subsequent phases, the stone was decorated with vegetal and arabesque motifs. In the final stage, the surface was outlined, polished, and sanded. This study aims to explore the symbolic meanings of the vegetal and Dahān-e Azhdari motifs on this exquisite tombstone from the Herat period. According to historical evidence, the work is attributed to the artists Shams al-Din Heravi and Kamal al-Din Behzad. The research focuses on the symbolic aspects of these motifs and their connection to the early death of Prince Qarib Mirza. The research question addresses the symbolic dimensions and specific features of the vegetal and Dahān-e Azhdari motifs on the Sang-e Haft Qalam tombstone of Prince Qarib Mirza. The study employs a qualitative methodology with a descriptive-analytical approach. The research population consists solely of the tombstone of Prince Qarib Mirz. Findings reveal that the numerous Dahān-e Azhdari motifs and their accompanying petals hold symbolic meaning. The densely decorated surface and the multiplicity of floral elements metaphorically allude to the deceased and his early death in youth. Based on this evidence, it becomes clear that the motifs were deliberately designed with symbolic intent, specifically in reference to Prince Qarib Mirza as the owner of the tomb.
