PERSONAL FACTORS AFFECTING EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN THE CASE OF COMMERCIAL BANK OF ETHIOPIA SHASHEMENE TOWN BRANCHES
ABSTRACT The study investigated the organizational factors that influence the performance of employees at the CBESHB. The objectives of the study were: to assess how job stress influences employee performance at CBESHB; to examine how motivation affects employee performance at CBESHB; and to find out how communication influences performance of employees at CBESHB. A descriptive and explanatory survey research design was adopted using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study targeted 114 respondents but 110 returned the survey questions, indicating a response rate of 96.5 per cent. Simple random sampling technique was used to select clerical employees while purposive sampling was used to select the Bank Management Staff. Data analysis involved frequencies, percentages and inferential statistics such as correlations and the coefficient of determination findings revealed a negative relationship (r=, sig=0.011) between job stress and employee performance; a significant positive relationship (r=0.310, sig=0.000) between motivation and employee performance; and also significant relationship (r=0.04, sig=0.007) between communication and employee performance. It was therefore concluded that job stress affected employee performance negatively whereas motivation and communication positively affected the performance of employees at CBESHB in one way or the other. The study recommends that the bank management should build and improve on teamwork and develop the stress management mechanism; create opportunities for employees to interact with the managers of the college in order to improve on the communication; and encourage employee innovation, increase on their salaries, institute organizational loyalty programmes and reward long-serving employees to enhance their motivation.7
