Determining Vibration Frequency and Damping of Metal Beams Using Image Processing Method

In the present study, damping and frequency of two beams, including galvanized and steel beams, were evaluated using the image processing method. The beam supports were designed as a hinge and the intended beam was vibrated through displacements. the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) method with using MATLAB software was applied to obtain vibration frequency and damping of the beams. To control and validate the obtained results, the analytical method, also, was used to investigate the vibration frequency and damping of the beams. comparing the frequency results derived from the two analytical and image processing methods, an error of 4.5% and 1.7% was obtained for the steel and galvanized beam, respectively. Moreover, the damping obtained for both samples was suitably consistent with the results of the analytical method. These results clearly show that the image processing method, which is a non-contact method, can be considered an appropriate and efficient method for the analysis of dynamic characteristics such as frequency and damping.
