Assessements of Students' Addiction to Social Media In Relation to Study Habit: The Case of Second Year Regular Program Undergraduate Students of Mettu University.

This study was conducted to find out the assessments of student's addiction to social media in relation to study habits in the case of Mettu University. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to collect the relevant data of the study, a total of 262 participants were selected using stratified random sampling techniques. Questionnaires and in-depth interviews were the instruments used to collect data from students. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and Spearman Rank correlation coefficient tools were employed for statistical analysis of quantitative data, and thematic analysis was used for qualitative data. The study results illustrated that majority of the participants spent 4 hours on social media per day, and the least for social media usage was to chat and entertainment. As the result of the t-test indicated t(38)=0.162, p= 0.872, there is no statistically significant difference between Male and Female students in terms of social media addiction. The finding of Spearman’s rho correlations showed that there is a significant moderate correlation between the level of social media usage and students' scores (r= -.002, p=.048). Based on the findings it is suggested that the user (students) of social media should be aware of the negative and positive influence of social media on study habits; students’ should minimize the time spending on social media to pay more attention to their education, and University teachers should play a vital role in creating awareness and orienting students how to use social media without affecting their study habit.
