Cyber Patriotism: Strengthening Election Security in an Underfunded Locality through Student-Led Cybersecurity Consulting; It’s All Fun & Zero-Sum Games Until There’s No STEM Professionals: How Education Institutions Are Failing Future STEM Experts
Underfunded localities face significant challenges in meeting state-mandated election security standards, putting the integrity of democratic systems at risk. As part of the Cyber Security & Elections course at the University of Virginia, I served as a cybersecurity consultant for a financially constrained Virginia locality. To support their compliance efforts, our team conducted stakeholder interviews, infrastructure audits, and developed an actionable cybersecurity improvement plan. I led the technical analysis, applying NIST and CISA frameworks to identify vulnerabilities and recommend feasible, low-cost mitigations. The final deliverable—including a Business Impact Analysis and implementation roadmap—helped the locality satisfy security benchmarks and improve institutional awareness. Future work will focus on long-term sustainability through periodic assessments, stakeholder training, and grant-supported investments.
