Framework for Designing Qualitative Data Physicalizations through Loom Weaving
This framework outlines a method for qualitative data physicalization through loom weaving, combining practical design strategies with critical reflection on materiality. It guides makers in translating narrative, affective, and temporal elements into symbolic textile forms while questioning the cultural, ethical, and epistemological dimensions of craft-based visualization. Weaving is positioned not only as a mode of visualization but as a relational and epistemic act—one that challenges dominant norms of data abstraction and revalues embodied, situated, and labor-intensive forms of knowledge. This approach supports embodied, process-oriented engagements with data, and values situated, labor-intensive knowledge.
