Teaching AI and Data Analytics to Electrical Engineering Students

Artificial intelligence and data analytics began to dominate all aspects of technology. Electrical Engineering graduates entering the workforce will likely rely on AI tools and systems to manage their engineering tasks, or they may be required to integrate AI features into the products and services they develop. Traditionally, these subjects were part of computer engineering curriculum rather than electrical engineering. Considering the recent advances made in AI and machine learning, and their widespread application in various fields, integrating these subjects into electrical engineering curriculum would be beneficial to engineering graduates. Nevertheless, it is a challenging task. A major challenge is to make the subject relevant to the body of electrical engineering knowledge. Another obstacle to overcome is students' shortcoming in computing knowledge and programming skills. In this paper, we present our initiatives to integrate AI, machine learning and data analytics concepts into electrical engineering curriculum and report our key findings and challenges encountered.
