Electrochemical\nGiese Reaction of α‑Trifluoromethylstyrenes\nwith Disulfides: Efficient Access to β‑Trifluoromethylated\nThioethers

An electrochemical Giese-type hydrothiolation of α-trifluoromethylstyrenes\nwith disulfides is disclosed for the first time under metal-free and\nmild conditions. This approach provides a facile methodology for β-trifluoromethylated\nthioethers in moderate to good yields with high functional group tolerance\nstarting from readily available substrates. Additionally, late-stage\nmodification of drug molecules and gram-scale synthesis show practical\nadvantages. The radical pathway of this reaction has been revealed\nby control experiments and cyclic voltammetry measurements.

Abstract

An electrochemical Giese-type hydrothiolation of α-trifluoromethylstyrenes\nwith disulfides is disclosed for the first time under metal-free and\nmild conditions. This approach provides a facile methodology for β-trifluoromethylated\nthioethers in moderate to good yields with high functional group tolerance\nstarting from readily available substrates. Additionally, late-stage\nmodification of drug molecules and gram-scale synthesis show practical\nadvantages. The radical pathway of this reaction has been revealed\nby control experiments and cyclic voltammetry measurements.
