Highly Efficient\nSynthesis of Alkyl-Linked Poly(arylene\nalkylene) Anion Exchange Membranes via Postfunctionalization Integrated\nwith Olefin Hydroboration and Suzuki Coupling Reaction

Postfunctionalization\nof poly(arylene alkylene) offers a simple\nand effective strategy to prepare robust anion exchange membranes\n(AEMs). The introduction of extended alkyl spacers not only enhances\nthe chemical stability but also promotes the formation of microphase\nseparation. Herein, we report a novel postfunctionalization approach\nthat integrates alkyl linkers onto the poly(arylene alkylene) backbone\nthrough a one-pot reaction combining olefin hydroboration with Suzuki\ncoupling. This methodology demonstrates exceptional reactivity and\nensures complete functionalization with 100% efficiency while eliminating\nthe need for complex monomer synthesis or purification. Two AEMs with\ndications were subsequently prepared via the Menshutkin reaction.\nThese AEMs exhibit distinct phase separation structures, ultrahigh\nOH– conductivity, excellent alkaline stability,\nand superior performance in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis.\nThis study presents a viable postfunctionalization strategy for developing\nhigh-performance AEMs and is expected to provide new insights into\npolymer chemistry and functional materials design.
