Networks and Stories. Analyzing the Transmission of the Feminist Intangible Cultural Heritage on Twitter

This article presents a hybrid methodological framework that integrates Social Network Analysis (SNA) and Machine Learning (ML) to examine the transmission of feminist intangible cultural heritage through Twitter. Focusing on the fourth wave of feminism, the study explores the role of digital activism and hashtag feminism in shaping collective memory and intergenerational discourse. The authors propose a data-driven approach combining unsupervised algorithms—such as the Louvain method for community detection—with qualitative content analysis, enabling the interpretation of massive social media data. Drawing on four case studies related to feminist debates in Spanish-speaking Twitter communities, the research highlights the potential of combining inductive and hypothetico-deductive reasoning in digital ethnography. This article contributes to digital sociology and feminist communication studies by illustrating how public controversies and social movements are structured and sustained in online environments. The methodological transparency and interdisciplinary grounding make this work a valuable resource for researchers in computational social sciences, communication studies, and gender studies. The approach offers replicable workflows for analysing complex online debates, with relevance for scholars studying political discourse, digital heritage, and AI-mediated communication.
