Should Hair Be Shaved After Hair Dye-Induced Anaphylaxis? A Case-Based Reflection from a Severe Allergy Patient
This case report explores the overlooked issue of whether hair should be shaved after hair dye-induced anaphylaxis, based on a real-life experience. It discusses the possible pathophysiological mechanisms, including the hypothesis that para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and its oxidation products may persist in dyed hair and continue to act as chronic allergens, potentially leading to immune system sensitization and IgE generalization. The report also highlights a rare presentation of anaphylaxis without skin symptoms and proposes a preventive approach for hypersensitive individuals.
