The Social Economy in the North of Tyne Combined Authority
AbstractThis report explores the scope, scale, and dynamics of the social economy within the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA) region. Socially Focused Organisations (SFOs), encompassing charities, Community Interest Companies (CICs), Companies Limited by Guarantee (CLGs), and other structures, are assessed for their capacity to deliver social value and economic impact. The study utilizes cross-sectional data from 2021/2022 and identifies over 3,500 SFOs in the region, of which the majority are small or micro-scale entities with limited financial resources. While 19% of SFOs reported profits, these were concentrated in larger organizations often extending beyond the NTCA's boundaries.
Key findings highlight that CICs exhibit potential for scalable growth, whereas smaller charities deliver localized social value. The report emphasizes the importance of geographically targeted funding to address regional disparities and advocates for tailored financial instruments, including grants and blended finance, to enhance the sector's efficacy. Recommendations include adopting measures of social value for evaluating funding impact and engaging stakeholders in developing strategic funding mechanisms. The study concludes with a call for further research to refine the NTCA's social economy strategy.
