Data and Code from: Evolutionary Origins Override Contemporary Environmental Filtering in Shaping Terrestrial Algae Diversity
This study incorporates 96 unpublished metabarcoding datasets of terrestrial, phyllosphere algae collected from 16 sites located across China. Each dataset consists of a site-tree leaf sample. Each sample comprised three or more leaves (or tissues of varying leaf sizes) gathered from trees at heights ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 m aboveground. The full-length 18S rDNA gene was amplified in a 50 mL reaction mixture using eukaryotic universal primers, Euk18SA and Euk18SB.We developed a modeling framework that separates the effects of the interplay between contemporary filtering and evolutionary history in shaping empirical biodiversity. The species-distribution model has two modules that describe the observational and underlying processes that reflect contemporary filtering and phylogenetic history. With Bayesian estimation of model parameters, we fitted our species-distribution model using the frequency of species occurrence. This model fitting was done with the Bayesian framework “Stan” and its R interface “cmdstanr”.
