Usage of UAVs – in between Space and In-situ session, Open Data and Open Knowledge Workshop 2024
In recent years, the use of uncrewed vehicles (UAVs) for collecting space-based and in-situ data has shown immense potential to enhance a wide range of activities within the GEO community. This growing trend has ignited important discussions about how the principles of Open Knowledge, alongside the GEO infrastructure, can better support the use, dissemination, and integration of UAV-based data across various GEO initiatives. Through a diverse range of speakers covering several regions and thematic areas where GEO is active, this session will explore the current role of UAV in GEO Community, current needs of the community regarding UAV data and assess how Open Knowledge practices are shaping and can further enhance the use of these data resources. The evolution of the GEO Infrastructure to better support UAVs will also be covered. By addressing the obstacles and opportunities in this evolving landscape, we aim to pave the way for more effective collaboration and utilization of UAV data and services within the GEO framework. To support these discussions and outline the following steps, we will showcase ongoing initiatives and projects, highlighting how the GEO Community is tackling these challenges and opportunities. Session moderator: Bente Lilja Bye, BLB Session speakers Huanyin Yue, LREIS Mario Vargas Shakaim, Indigenous Alliance Rabi Sahoo, Indian Agriculture Research Institute Daniele Ehrlich, European Commission
