ADVOCACY FOR PUTTING THE UTTERER AT THE CORE OF GRAMMATICAL EXPLANATION
Abstract: This paper seeks to restore the place of the utterer, lord of the verbal game, when explaining grammatical facts. It is obvious that almost all grammar books remain silent about the role of the utterer but describe the form of the verb or the nouns without noticing that such items as -ing, the, since, do, -s, -en, -ed, must, shall etc. are visible traces of the choice made by the utterer while structuring his utterances. Moreover, that utterer is absent from the grammar textbooks which only focus on the description of the forms of verbs and nouns. This paper seeks to answer the following question: How can one explain successfully a grammatical structure production without the utterer who produces it? The objective of this paper is to analyse grammatical items by including the utterer’s intervention in the structuring process through grammatical items used. The hypothesis is that by excluding the utterer from the structuring process, most of the grammatical explanations proposed by grammarians are inconsistent, which in fine constitute a huge challenge for learners.
