RAPID (Rapid On-site Analyte-specific Peptide Intervention and Diversion): A New Approach to Snakebite Envenomation Management

AbstractSnakebite envenomation is a major global health crisis. Relying on conventional animal-derived antivenom, current treatment for snakebites is hampered by imprecise diagnosis, adverse reactions, and logistical hurdles. We propose a novel, integrated technological framework named RAPID. A portable mass spectrometer performs a rapid, targeted analysis of a patient's blood sample, following on-site user input of a suspected snake species. A cloud-based platform then verifies the venom profile against the chemical data, provides clinical guidance, and directs the patient. The system's final stage is the on-demand, doctor-authorised synthesis of specific neutralising peptides at the receiving hospital. RAPID is designed to replace the current empirical model with a precise, data-driven, and personalised therapeutic strategy, improving both the speed and safety of care (Basnyat, Shilpakar 2022).
