Administration of Alprostadil (Dalveol®) for Peripheral Arterial Disease
Alprostadil (Dalveol®) is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin E1 used primarily to treat advanced peripheral arterial disease (PAD), particularly in stages III and IV of the Fontaine classification, when other treatments are ineffective or not feasible. Its therapeutic effects include vasodilation and reduced platelet aggregation, mediated through activation of prostaglandin receptors and increased intracellular cyclic AMP. PAD is a vascular condition marked by narrowing or blockage of arteries, mainly in the lower limbs, and is commonly associated with smoking and aging. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial to prevent severe complications such as critical limb ischemia and potential limb loss.
