APEX©- an Effective Model for Treating Non-Suicidal Self-Injury
Whilst Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) serves many functions (e.g. Midkiff etal, 2018) no attention has been paid to matching the function of NSSI totreatment interventions. Seeing this gap and drawing on evidence-based andpractice-based understandings, the APEX© model was developed. Thecomponents of the APEX© model are outlined and compared with Treatmentas Usual (TAU) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). With examples from2005 to date, this paper shows how the APEX© model increases other ways ofcoping, reduces NSSI and increases hope. Suggestions for future research areoutlined.
