Rise of Women's Political Consciousness in Colonial India: A Historical Perspective
This paper explores the emergence and evolution of women’s political consciousness in colonial India, analyzing its roots in socio-religious reforms, the impact of Western education, and the role of women-led organizations. While the colonial state introduced legal and institutional reforms, Indian women transformed these platforms into spaces of empowerment and resistance. The paper also examines how the freedom struggle shaped gendered political identity and consciousness. Drawing from feminist theory and postcolonial historiography, the study provides a nuanced understanding of how colonial structures unintentionally sowed the seeds for women’s political awakening.
