Leadership as a Truce to Corrupt Practices and Development
Abstract This paper investigates the relationships among leadership failure, widespread corruption, and ongoing underdevelopment in Nigeria. With vast resources to its credit, the Nigerian state is, however, underdeveloped because it does not have enough leaders to make transformations happen. We argue that a key reason for Nigeria’s poor development is the lack of governance that is values-based, participative and responsible and that follows both indigenous and modern ways of thinking. Using different methods of study, the paper: Reveals how corruption has gradually taken root as a trusted way to make money in Nigeria; Verifies research that suggests poor leadership mainly hinders the country’s progress; Suggests major governance reforms to make the state work for its people. The report stresses that patriotic feelings are not enough on their own; Nigeria needs: Leaders who can provide for its people in the long run, all citizens to join in and updates in organization to guarantee merit, honesty and action against corruption. According to the research, Nigeria needs changes from the highest levels as well as community engagement to defeat the vicious cycle. The country will achieve its true potential only if its governance is deliberate, disciplined, and guided by clear ethics.
