Looking into SN host galaxies with AMUSING at the VLT
I will present the main goals, capabilities, and recent discoveries of the All-weather MUse Supernova Integral field Nearby Galaxies (AMUSING) survey: a successful programme that has observed 738 supernova (SN) host galaxies (>1200h) using the MUSE instrument at the VLT. The large sample observed under sub-optimal observing conditions, combined with the cutting-edge integral-field spectroscopy mode of MUSE, has allowed us to produce very detailed and statistically significant analyses of SN environments. Recently, we analyzed 113 galaxies that hosted core-collapse (CC) SNe discovered by the non-targeted ASAS-SN survey, which allowed us to conduct a homogeneous study of CCSN environments as a function of their host galaxy properties. We have found that stripped-envelope SNe occur in environments with higher values of metallicity than SNe II, strengthening the binary scenario for the former, and that SNe II and IIn are associated with similar metallicities, ages, and star-formation rates, suggesting similar progenitors for at least a fraction of these events. We have also estimated the occurrence of CCSN as a function of metallicity and found a strong decrease as metallicity increases. We discuss different possible explanations for these results, such as selection effects or a metallicity dependence on the explodability of massive stars.
