Raags as Timekeepers: Exploring the Logic and Relevance of the Raag Samay Chakra
This research paper explores the Raag Samay Chakra, the time-theory of Hindustani classical music, through both traditional and scientific lenses. It examines how specific raags are assigned to different times of day based on emotional, psychological, Ayurvedic, and astrological factors. Drawing from classical texts, brainwave mapping estimates, and listener studies, the paper demonstrates that this system is not arbitrary—but deeply aligned with human circadian rhythms and musical perception. The study also includes a visual EEG analysis and highlights the philosophical, cultural, and health-based significance of time-bound listening. This work aims to re-establish the Raag Samay Chakra as a logical, relevant, and transformative framework in both academic and performance spaces.
