Regulatory Challenges in Developing Innovative Health Insurance Products: A Comparative Analysis of Compliance Strategies in Emerging and Developed Markets
Regulatory challenges remain a barrier to developing innovative health insurance products to respond to emerging health needs. This research delves into the regulatory challenges that health insurance companies confront in emerging and developed markets in studying and examining compliance strategies, which help health insurance companies across the webs of regulatory cities. The study involved 20 Indian, Brazilian, EU, and U.S. industry professionals, and through qualitative research, the key challenges of regulatory uncertainty, fragmentation, and stringent compliance requirements were realized. Findings meant that emerging markets had to contend with inconsistent policies and bureaucratic inefficiencies while defending their turf above developing markets that had to battle with strict data protection laws and dense approval processes. An analysis of the comparative case demonstrates that the approach to regulatory engagement and pilot programs is empirically important in emerging markets. In contrast, regulatory compliance structure and legal expertise underpin the insurer investments in developed markets. This conveys the need for regulatory harmonization, streamlined approval process and a regulatory sandbox to nurture innovation alongside consumer protection. The implications of this research are relevant to a broader discussion of reconciling innovation with compliance by providing strategic advice for policymakers and insurers to facilitate healthy growth of the global health insurance system.
